Hi and welcome to the trailer for my podcast, No Shrinking Violets, debuting Thursday, January 2, 2025!

I’m Mary Rothwell and I am passionate about helping women take up their space and connect with what they truly want and need. As a therapist and a certified integrative mental health practitioner who has worked with clients for nearly 35 years, I have seen women “stay small” and fit into the space in life that they have been conditioned to believe they deserve. And as a woman who has lived with these guardrails on my life for many years, I know how it feels to “stay in my lane” – that is, the lane that was decided for me by early experiences, society and sometimes my own limiting beliefs – and I also know how it feels to chart my own journey and program my own GPS.

This podcast is part of that journey – using what I know, what I love (I’ll get to that in a minute) and what I’ve learned– to help other women take up their space and find true fulfillment based on their Essential Nature.

Do y’all know what a shrinking violet is? Well, it has a history as a term used to describe someone – typically a woman – who is introverted and overshadowed by the personalities around her. First, “introvert” is a hugely misunderstood term, as my introverted friends have some of the strongest minds and opinions of anyone I know. Second, I think it’s all too common for women to be overshadowed in their own lives. This is especially true in the workplace, and it is also often an aspect of certain cultures or families.

So what I love (in addition to helping clients build lives that they love) is plants and gardening. Total 100% plant geek. And I am here to tell you that violets are actually amazingly resilient and vibrant. And they are the host plant for the fritillary butterfly! Sure, their flowers tend to close at night – hence the term “shrinking” – but that is often a feature of flowers. It’s how they rest! They open in the daytime to allow pollination and to share their beauty. If I were a flower, I’d want to be a violet for sure!

So what better name for a podcast where we’ll discuss how women can bloom and rest, how they can believe in what they know is true for THEM and how they can live their lives in a way that is balanced and fulfilling.

We will talk about what it truly means to take up your space in the world – mind, body and spirit – we’ll talk about sleep and supplements and nutrition and how to live like a plant. Yep, one of my favorite topics and part of living based on your Essential Nature. We’ll talk about setting boundaries, communicating, and relationships, and we’ll also explore mental health and wellness: trauma and resilience, how our food impacts our mood and the 8 spokes of the Wellness Wheel. And so much more!

I will have some of my favorite women on here with me to talk about topics like holistic medicine, leadership, building fulfilling careers, overcoming limiting narratives and living with chronic illness. The sky is the limit and I would love YOUR input about topics that you’d love to hear.

So mark your calendar for Episode 1, which will drop January 2 on all the main podcast streaming channels. I can’t wait!
